Year 12 Parents’ Information Evening

Year 12 Parents’ Information Evening

Wednesday 12th September 2018

6:00 – 7:00pm

The Well

Dear parents/carers

I was delighted to be able to welcome your child into The Blandford School Sixth Form last week. Although they have only been in school for four days the year 12 students have made a great impression on staff and it has been fantastic to see their enthusiasm for the next stage of their education – long may it continue!

We have our Year 12 Parents’ Information Evening on Wednesday 12th September in the Well. This event starts at 6.00pm and I anticipate it will finish by 7.00pm. Students are welcome to join you but don’t feel it is obligatory for them to come if they have other commitments. You’ll receive information about the structure of the Sixth Form, supporting your child, the block work experience placement and preparation for University or Apprenticeships.

Last week students were given an assembly by Mrs Wilson and our Head Boy (Ben Knight) and Head Girl (Alice McNab)  who informed them about the new positions of responsibility for students in the new Student Forum. This week we have assemblies about Independent Learning with Mr Williams and a second assembly from Mr Johnson about the roles of House Captains. If your son/daughter would like to develop his/her leadership skills the Student Forum and House Captains would be a good place to start. They will be given further information shortly.

Students have already signed up for a variety of extra-curricular activities. I was also delighted we had so many sign up to the JP Morgan Employability Programme which starts tomorrow and continues over the course of the year. I believe this programme is now full but we will have other similar events over the course of the year if your child missed out. We also have a trip on the 26th September to the Careers and Apprenticeship Show at Bournemouth International Centre. Further information about this trip will follow shortly but it would be appropriate for any Level 2 student or any Level 3 student who is considering apprenticeships. There is also a session from 4.30pm on the same date at the BIC for parents and their children about Careers and Apprenticeships.

I have also emailed year 12 students with information  about a Healthcare weekend for aspiring medics, dentists and vets. We are not organising a school trip to this but it may be something you’d like to do yourselves: https://medicmentor.co.uk/national-medic-mentor-weekend/

Your child is also working on a research project to help give him/her ideas about his/her next steps following the Sixth Form. I realise is seems a bit early to get started on this but I do believe that early research helps support a strong application to universities, jobs and apprenticeships as students can be doing extra things to ensure they stand out from the crowd in this competitive world.

I hope to see you on Wednesday,

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Vicky Moore

Head of Sixth Form
